James Levert Davis is an important leader in the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church. He holds the special title of bishop. A bishop is a high-ranking spiritual leader in some Christian churches. Bishop Davis was chosen for this role in 2004. He was the 123rd person to become a bishop in the AME Church.

Bishop Davis's Early Roles
After becoming a bishop, James Levert Davis served in different parts of the world. His first assignment was in the 19th Episcopal District. This district covers several areas in the Republic of South Africa, including KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. He helped lead the church's work there.
In 2008, Bishop Davis was given a new assignment. He became the leader of the 9th Episcopal District. This district includes the entire state of Alabama in the United States.
Leading Big Bethel AME Church
Before he became a bishop, James Levert Davis was a pastor for many years. For twelve years, he led the historic Big Bethel AME Church in Atlanta, Georgia. This church is very well-known and has a long history.
Later Assignments and Leadership
In 2016, Bishop Davis received another assignment. He was appointed to lead the 2nd Episcopal District. This district covers parts of Maryland, Washington D.C., Virginia, and North Carolina.
Bishop Davis has also held important leadership positions within the AME Church. From 2010 to 2011, he was the president of the Council of Bishops. This means he led all the other bishops in the church.
Currently, Bishop Davis is the leader of the Department of Global Witness and Ministry. This department is in charge of the church's mission work around the world. He also helps with the Committee on Compilation of the Book of Discipline. This committee works on the rules and guidelines for the AME Church.
Today, Bishop Davis serves as the leader of the 7th Episcopal District. This district includes parts of South Carolina.
