James Macaulay was a religious leader known as a Presbyterian preacher. During his time, preachers often needed a special permission, or "licence," from the government to speak publicly. James Macaulay did not have this official licence. Because of this, he was arrested in a town called Leith. He was then sent to a famous prison on an island known as the Bass Rock. He stayed there for about three months, from April 4 to July 19, in the year 1679.

Why Was He Imprisoned?

James Macaulay was a Presbyterian preacher. This meant he followed a certain type of Christian faith. In the 1600s, some religious leaders, like Macaulay, did not agree with the official Church of Scotland. They were called "nonconforming" ministers. They often preached without the government's permission.

The Arrest and Reward

In June 1679, the government's Council decided to arrest many of these nonconforming ministers. They even offered a reward to anyone who could help catch them. James Macaulay was on this list.

Early in 1679, James Macaulay was arrested in Leith. He was with another preacher named Mr. Robert Ross. They were both hiding because they did not conform to the official church rules.

Life at Bass Rock Prison

The Council decided that both James Macaulay and Mr. Ross should be sent to the Bass Rock. This was a well-known prison on an island in the sea. They were sent there on April 4.

However, James Macaulay did not stay imprisoned for very long. He was set free in July of the same year. He was allowed to leave on one condition: he had to promise to appear before the Council again if they called him.
