James Pierce Maxwell (born 1813, died 1896) was an important figure in Ireland and Great Britain during the 1800s. He was a member of the Irish nobility, a Nova Scotia baronet, and a Member of Parliament. This means he held a special title and helped make laws for the country. From 1838 to 1884, he was known as The Honourable James Pierce Maxwell.

Early Life and Family Background

James Pierce Maxwell was born in 1813. His father was Henry Maxwell, who held the title of the 6th Baron Farnham. His mother was Lady Anne Butler. James grew up in a family that was part of the nobility, which meant they had special titles and responsibilities in society.

Joining Parliament

On 17 February 1843, James Pierce Maxwell became a Member of Parliament for County Cavan. This was an important role. As an MP, he represented the people of County Cavan in the British Parliament. His job was to speak for their interests and help create new laws.

Military Service

Besides his political work, James Pierce Maxwell also had a military career. He served as a Lieutenant-Colonel in the 97th Foot, which was an infantry regiment in the British Army. He bravely fought in the Crimean War. This war took place from 1853 to 1856. During his service, he was seriously injured.

Becoming a Baron and Baronet

James Pierce Maxwell's life changed significantly in 1884. When his brother passed away on 4 June 1884, James inherited the title of the 9th Baron Farnham. This meant he became a Lord and gained a seat in the House of Lords.

Inheriting a Baronetcy

The next year, on 4 December 1885, he also inherited another important title. He became the 12th Baronet of Calderwood. This title came from a distant cousin. A baronet is a hereditary title, similar to a knight, but it can be passed down through the family.

Later Life and Legacy

Lord Farnham, as he was known after 1884, never married. He passed away on 26 October 1896. Since he did not have any children, his titles were passed on to his nephew, Somerset Henry Maxwell. James Pierce Maxwell is remembered for his service in Parliament and his military bravery during the Crimean War.
