Sir James Pemberton: A London Leader
Early Life and Training
James Pemberton was born in 1550 in Wrightington, a small place in Lancashire, England. His family were likely farmers. When he was about 17, in 1567, he moved to London. There, he started an apprenticeship with Francis Heaton. This meant he learned the skill of being a goldsmith.
Becoming a Goldsmith
After his training, James Pemberton became a member of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths. This was a powerful group for goldsmiths in London. He worked hard and became very successful. He even bought property in Twickenham. By 1597, he was rich enough to do something special. He used his money to start a grammar school in Heskin, his home area. This school probably opened in 1600 and could teach up to 200 boys.
Important Roles in London
Sir James Pemberton held many important jobs in London. From 1600 to 1601, he was the main leader, called the Prime Warden, of the Goldsmiths Company.
In 1602, he was chosen as an alderman for Bishopsgate ward in the City of London. An alderman was a senior member of the city council. In the same year, he was also elected Sheriff of London. The sheriffs helped keep law and order in the city.
On 26 July 1603, he was given the title of "Sir" and became a knight. Later that year, he also became an alderman for another area, Castle Baynard ward.
Lord Mayor of London
In 1607, Sir James Pemberton built a large house called Camden House in Maiden Lane. This was right next to the Goldsmiths’ Hall. In 1611, he reached the highest position in the city. He was elected Lord Mayor of London. This was a very big honor. To celebrate this, a special show was created. It was called “Chruso-thriambos – The Triumphs of Gold” and was written by Anthony Mundy.
Family Life
Sir James Pemberton was married twice. His first wife was from a family called Wyrhall, from Yorkshire. She passed away in August 1599. A couple of months later, he married Anne Hadley. She was a widow whose maiden name was Barnard.
