The James Pratt Funeral Service was once a special old house located at 69 Farmington Avenue in Hartford, Connecticut. It was built in 1860. This house was important because it was one of the very few buildings from the mid-1800s that were still standing on that street.
In 1979, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of places in the United States that are important to history. Sadly, the house was later taken down. The land where it stood is now part of the Aetna company's main campus.
What Did the House Look Like?
The house at 69 Farmington Avenue was on the south side of Farmington Avenue. It was near Flower Street and the large Aetna company buildings. Today, this area is mostly parking lots.
The house had two floors and was made of brick. It had a flat roof with a wide edge, which is typical of the Italianate style. This style was popular in the mid-1800s. The windows on the second floor had special decorative frames. These frames were shaped like small roofs with brackets.
A newer, one-story porch was added to the front of the house. It covered the windows on the ground floor. These ground-floor windows were tall and narrow, showing a bit of the Greek Revival style.
A Glimpse into the Past
The James Pratt Funeral Service house was built around 1860. When it was added to the National Register of Historic Places, it was one of only two houses left from that time period on Farmington Avenue. This street used to be full of similar old homes.
Over time, the area around the house changed. It became more of a business district. Because of this, the house was no longer used as a home. It was changed to be used for other purposes. Eventually, the house was taken down to make space for the Aetna campus to grow.
