The Life of James Ruthven
James Ruthven was born on October 17, 1777. His birthplace was Melville House, a large home near Cupar in Fife, Scotland. He was the oldest son of James Ruthven, who was the 6th Lord Ruthven of Freeland. His mother was Lady Mary Elizabeth Leslie. When his father passed away in 1789, James became the 7th Lord Ruthven of Freeland. This meant he inherited his father's noble title.
James Ruthven was also a professional soldier. Until 1807, he held the rank of Major. He served in the 90th Regiment of Foot. This army group was also known as the Perthshire Volunteers.
In 1825, James Ruthven was chosen for a special honor. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. This society is a famous group that promotes learning and science in Scotland. Sir Thomas Dick Lauder, a well-known writer and naturalist, suggested him for this honor.
James Ruthven lived a long life. He passed away on July 27, 1853.
