James Shaffer (born February 14, 1910 – died March 9, 2014) was an important African American religious leader. He was a pastor who led the Church of Universal Triumph, Dominion of God, Inc.. He took over this role after the death of James F. Jones in 1971.
Early Life
James Shaffer was born on February 14, 1910. He grew up in Money, Mississippi. He was the youngest of 16 children. His parents were Jeff and Elmira Shaffer.
Meeting Prophet Jones
In 1943, James Shaffer and his first wife, Wyoming Shaffer, moved to Detroit. They decided to attend a meeting of Triumph the Church and Kingdom of God in Christ. They wanted to hear James F. Jones speak. He was also known as Prophet Jones.
Leading the Church
Shaffer became a top minister in the Church of Universal Triumph, Dominion of God, Inc.. He led the main church in Detroit, called Universal Thankful Center #1. He also helped Prophet Jones directly.
Prophet Jones became ill and asked Shaffer to "carry his torch." This meant he wanted Shaffer to take over his leadership role. When Jones passed away in 1971, Shaffer became the new 'Dominion Ruler'. This made him the main leader of the church.
In 1995, when he was 85 years old, Shaffer married Maggie Boatmon. She had been a member of the church for a long time. Maggie Boatmon then became the new First Dominion Lady.
In 2010, James Shaffer celebrated his 100th birthday.
The church announced that on March 9, 2014, their leader, Reverend Lord James Shaffer, passed away. He was greatly missed by his family and the church community. He passed away after turning 104 years old on February 13, 2014.
