The James Weldon House is a special old house in Augusta, Kentucky. It is a great example of a style called Gothic vernacular architecture. This means it looks like a Gothic building but uses simpler, local building methods. The house has stayed almost exactly the same since it was built.

What Makes the James Weldon House Special?

The James Weldon House was built between 1860 and 1870. It shows off a unique style of building. This style is known as Carpenter Gothic. It means the house looks like a grand Gothic church, but it's made from wood.

House Design and Features

The house has three main sections on its front. This is called a "three-bay" design. A cool feature is the center gable, which is the triangular part of the wall under the roof. It also has a special lancet-style window. This type of window is tall and narrow, shaped like a pointed arch.

The sides of the house have fancy details called cornice returns. These are parts of the roof's edge that turn back on themselves. The windows on the sides have six small panes of glass on the top and six on the bottom. These are called "six-over-six" windows.

Front of the House Details

On the front of the house, the first-floor windows have two panes of glass on top and two on the bottom. These are known as "two-over-two lights." Above the front door, there is a small window called a transom window.

Other interesting parts of the house include small round vents in the attic. These are found in the side gables. A front porch was added to the house later on. The roof is made of ribbed metal. The foundation of the house is built from rough limestone rocks.

Who Lived in the House?

The first recorded owner of the house was James W. Weldon. He owned the property in 1877. Later, by 1884, a person named W.T. Fields bought the house.
