Early Life and Career

James Wrighten was born in 1745. He first trained to be a copperplate printer. This job involved making prints from special metal plates. However, James decided he wanted to be an actor instead.

He moved from a city called Birmingham to London. His very first performance on a big stage was at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. This happened on February 21, 1779. After his first show, he acted in many different plays at this theatre. He continued performing there until 1793. In 1786, he also started working as a prompter. A prompter is someone who helps actors remember their lines during a play.

Family Life

Around 1769, James Wrighten married a famous actress and singer named Mary Ann Wrighten. Her maiden name was Matthews. They got married in Birmingham. After their wedding, the couple moved to London to work in the theatre together.

James and Mary Ann had two daughters, named Mary and Charlotte. Their relationship had some difficult times. Eventually, they decided to separate. After their separation, Mary Ann Wrighten took their daughters with her. They moved to the United States to continue her acting career there. James Wrighten also had another daughter from a different marriage.

Later Years

James Wrighten continued his acting career in London. He passed away in London in 1793. He was 48 years old when he died.
