James Clifton of Mar, 30th Earl of Mar (born 22 November 1914 – died 21 April 1975) was an important British peer. A peer is a person who holds a special noble title, like an Earl. He was also a Member of the House of Lords, which is part of the United Kingdom's Parliament.
Who Was James Clifton of Mar?
James Clifton of Mar was born as James Clifton Lane. He later became the 30th Earl of Mar, a very old Scottish title. He officially received the name "of Mar" in 1959. This happened because he was recognized as the next person in line to inherit the title from his relative, Lionel Erskine-Young, who was the 29th Earl of Mar.
Becoming the Earl
Before he became the Earl, James was known as "The Master of Mar." This was his title while he was waiting to inherit the Earldom. In 1965, he officially became the 30th Earl of Mar.
James had one son, David, who sadly passed away in 1967. When James himself passed away in 1975, his elder daughter, Margaret of Mar, became the next Earl (or Countess, in her case). She became the 31st Countess of Mar.
His Family Life
James Clifton of Mar was married two times.
His first marriage was to Millicent Mary Salton on 1 March 1939. Together, they had three children:
- Margaret of Mar, 31st Countess of Mar (born 1940)
- David Charles of Mar, Lord Garioch (1944–1967)
- Lady Janet of Mar (born 1946)
James and Millicent Mary Salton later divorced in 1958.
He then married Marjorie Aileen Miller in 1960.
