Jane Ammons facts for kids
Jane Chumley Ammons (born in 1953) is a well-known American industrial engineer. She is famous for her work on how companies manage their products and materials, from getting them to customers (called supply chain engineering) to recycling old items like carpet. She used to be in charge of the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Tech. She also led a big group called the Institute of Industrial Engineers and is now a professor who has retired but is still honored by Georgia Tech.
Her Journey in Engineering
Jane Ammons made history in 1982. She was the first woman to earn a special advanced degree, called a Ph.D., in industrial engineering from Georgia Tech. Her research was about how electric companies plan to make enough power for everyone.
After finishing her Ph.D., she stayed at Georgia Tech. She became a teacher and researcher in the industrial engineering department. She was the first woman to be a professor there. From 2009 to 2010, she was the president of the Institute of Industrial Engineers, a major organization for engineers. In 2011, she became the head of the industrial engineering department at Georgia Tech. This was a big deal because she was the first woman to lead any engineering department at Georgia Tech. She retired in 2014.
Awards and Honors
Jane Ammons has received many important awards for her work. In 2003, she was chosen as a "Fellow" of the Institute of Industrial Engineers. This is a special honor given to members who have made big contributions.
In 2005, she won the first-ever WORMS Award. This award celebrates women who have helped advance the fields of operations research and management science. In 2014, she received the highest honor from the Institute of Industrial Engineers, called the Frank and Lillian Gilbreth Industrial Engineering Award. This award recognizes people who have made outstanding contributions to industrial engineering.
