About Jane Hastings
Jane Hastings was born and grew up in Seattle, Washington. She studied architecture at the University of Washington. She was the only woman in her class of 200 students! After graduating in 1952, she became one of the first women to be a licensed architect in Washington State. This meant she was officially allowed to design buildings.
She spent a few years working with the U.S. Army in Germany. When she returned to Seattle, she worked for several architecture firms. She gained experience designing many different types of buildings. These included schools, factories, homes, offices, and cultural places.
In 1961, Jane Hastings started her own company, "L. Jane Hastings, Architect." Later, in 1974, she created the "Hastings Group" with other architects. Her group designed over 500 projects, mainly houses, in the Seattle area. They also worked on other projects, like:
- Remodeling parts of Seattle–Tacoma International Airport
- Renovating University of Washington buildings, including Cunningham Hall, which became the campus's women's center.
- Restoring a historic building for the Tulalip Indian Tribe in 1976.
Teaching and Leadership
From 1969 to 1980, Jane Hastings also taught design at the University of Washington. She taught architectural drawing at Seattle Community College.
She was very active in the American Institute of Architects (AIA). This is a professional group for architects. In 1980, she became a "Fellow" of the AIA. This is a special honor for architects who have made important contributions. In 1992, she became the first woman to lead the AIA College of Fellows.
Jane Hastings passed away on March 25, 2024, at the age of 96.
