Working Together in Government
During her time as a representative, Jane Powdrell-Culbert was known for working with people from different political parties. This is called bipartisanship. It means she worked with both Republicans and Democrats to get things done.
In 2021, she helped create a new law called House Bill 55, also known as the Public-Private Partnership (P3) Act. This law was designed to help New Mexico improve its internet services and transportation, like roads. It allowed public groups (like the government) to work with private companies to make these improvements happen. The bill was very popular and passed easily in the House of Representatives.
Awards and Recognition
In 2019, the University of New Mexico Black Alumni Chapter gave Jane Powdrell-Culbert a special award. It was called the Trailblazer Award. This award recognized her important contributions and leadership.
How She Was Elected
Jane Powdrell-Culbert was elected to the New Mexico House of Representatives many times.
First Election in 2002
In 2002, the person who held the District 44 seat before her decided not to run again. Jane Powdrell-Culbert ran in the Republican primary election and won. Then, in the main election on November 5, 2002, she won against the Democratic candidate. This was her first time being elected to the House.
Re-elections and Serving Many Terms
After her first win, Jane Powdrell-Culbert was re-elected several times. She often ran without anyone else from her party challenging her in the primary elections. In some general elections, she ran unopposed, meaning no one ran against her at all. This shows that many people in her district supported her. She continued to win elections and served for twenty years, until January 2023.
