Jason Kevin Doyle (born 6 October 1985) is an Australian motorcycle speedway rider. Speedway is a type of motorcycle racing on an oval dirt track. He became a World Champion in 2017 after winning the 2017 Speedway Grand Prix.
Doyle is a key member of the Australia national speedway team. He has represented his country in the Speedway World Cup. He was also part of the Australian team that won the 2022 Speedway of Nations.
Jason Doyle's Speedway Journey
Jason Doyle was born in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. He started his British speedway career in March 2005. His first team was the Isle of Wight Islanders in the Premier League.
Early Career in the UK
In 2006, Doyle stayed with the Isle of Wight team. He also joined the Poole Pirates as a reserve rider. By 2007, he was riding full-time for Poole in the top Elite League. In 2008, he moved to the Somerset Rebels in the Premier League. Even though he moved, Poole still owned his racing rights.
During 2008, Doyle achieved some great things with Somerset. He finished second in the Premier League Pairs Championship with his teammate Emil Kramer. He also helped the team win the Premier League Knockout Cup. He even represented Australia at the Under-23 Test level.
Overcoming Challenges and Winning Titles
Doyle missed the entire 2009 season because of a shoulder injury. He tore his rotator cuff, which is a group of muscles and tendons around the shoulder joint. He made a strong comeback in 2010, rejoining the Poole Pirates.
In 2012, Doyle led the Somerset Rebels to win the League Cup. The team almost won the Premier League that year. Fans of the club voted him their Rider of the Year.
The 2013 season saw Doyle join the Birmingham Brummies. They reached the Elite League play-off final but lost to the Poole Pirates. That same year, he led the Somerset Rebels to win the Premier League title. He also won the Premier League Pairs Championship with Josh Grajczonek.
In December 2013, Doyle signed with the Leicester Lions for the 2014 season. There was a small issue with his work permit, which almost stopped him from riding in the UK. Luckily, it was sorted out before the season began. He stayed with the Lions in 2015. Then, in 2016, he returned to his original club, the Swindon Robins.
In 2013, Doyle also won the Master of Speedway title in Bockhorn, Germany. He moved between teams in Sweden and Poland too.
Australian Championship Success
Doyle came very close to winning his first Australian Individual Speedway Championship in 2014. He finished just two points behind Chris Holder after three rounds. In the final race of the last round, Doyle fell and was out of the race. This allowed Holder to win his fifth national title.
On 28 December 2014, Doyle won the South Australian Individual Speedway Championship at Gillman. He was the first rider from New South Wales to win this title since 1949. On 10 January 2015, Doyle won the final round of the 2015 Australian Individual Speedway Championship. This made him the Australian Champion.
In 2015, he also won the UK League Riders' Championship. He won this title again in 2018.
Recent UK Team Success
Doyle returned to the Swindon Robins for the 2019 season. He helped them win the SGB Premiership and the KO Cup. In 2022, he joined the Ipswich Witches for the SGB Premiership 2022 season. He won the Premiership Pairs with them and was a top rider in the league.
He continued with Ipswich for the SGB Premiership 2023 season. He helped the club win the KO Cup. He also re-signed with Ipswich for the 2024 and 2025 Premiership seasons.
International Racing Achievements
Jason Doyle has proudly represented Australia in the Speedway World Cup. He helped the team finish third in 2013 in the Czech Republic. They also placed third again in 2014 in Poland. Many experts thought he truly shined in the 2014 Final. He won four of his six races and was the second-highest scorer.
Qualifying for the Grand Prix
In 2014, Doyle finished second at the Speedway Grand Prix Challenge in Italy. This meant he qualified for the 2015 Speedway Grand Prix World Championship Series. He joined fellow Australian riders Chris Holder and Troy Batchelor in the series.
Doyle had a mixed year in 2015. He finished fifth overall in the series. His best result was second place at a race in Toruń, Poland. He qualified for the final race at home in Australia. However, a crash in the first turn caused him to go to the hospital with neck and chest injuries.
Becoming a World Champion
On 25 June 2016, Doyle won his first ever Grand Prix race. This was at the Speedway Grand Prix of Czech Republic in Prague. He then won three more Grand Prix races in a row. These wins were in Poland, Germany, and Sweden. This put him at the top of the world championship standings.
His three Grand Prix wins in a row were a big deal. No rider had done that since fellow Australian Jason Crump in 2006. However, a crash in his first race at the Toruń round ended his 2016 championship hopes. He dislocated his shoulder and broke his elbow.
Despite this setback, Doyle came back strong in 2017. He went on to win the world title, even though he rode with a broken foot for much of the season. He won the Czech Republic and Australian rounds. He secured the title in Australia, losing only two points all night. He won the meeting in front of his home fans.
Recent International Highlights
Doyle finished tenth in the 2022 Speedway World Championship. He scored 83 points during the 2022 Speedway Grand Prix. The biggest highlight of his 2022 season was winning the 2022 Speedway of Nations for Australia. He won it with his teammates Jack Holder and Max Fricke. He was then chosen as a full-time rider for the 2023 Speedway Grand Prix. In 2023, he was part of the Australian team that finished fourth in the 2023 Speedway World Cup final.
Doyle started the 2024 season well. He was almost unbeatable for Ipswich and won the 2024 Speedway Grand Prix of Poland in Warsaw. However, he then had a bad crash in a league match. He broke four ribs and hurt his lung. This injury meant he missed most of the season, ending his world title challenge. His injury problems continued, causing him to miss rounds of the 2025 Speedway Grand Prix.
