Jason Macdonald's Rugby Journey

Playing for Provincial Teams

Jason Macdonald has been a long-time player for the Otago team. He first played for them in 2002. He was a very important part of their squad. In 2010, he got an injury during the Super 14 season. This injury meant he could not play in the entire 2010 ITM Cup.

Playing in Super Rugby

Starting with the Highlanders

Jason joined the Highlanders team for the 2006 Super 14 season. This was his first time playing in the Super Rugby competition. He started his first game for the team that year. He also scored his first try in Super Rugby. Over the next two seasons, he played more often. By the 2008 season, he was the team's main hooker. He started 10 out of 13 matches that season.

Moving to the Crusaders

Before the 2009 season, Jason was available to other teams. The Crusaders team chose him. This was a big surprise to many. He had his best Super Rugby season with the Crusaders. He started 12 games because their main hooker, All-Black Corey Flynn, was injured. Jason even played in the team's semi-final game against the Bulls.

Returning to the Highlanders

For the 2010 season, Jason went back to play for the Highlanders. He mostly came off the bench as a substitute. Another player, Jason Rutledge, was the main hooker. His season ended early due to an Achilles injury. He got this injury while playing club rugby during a break in the schedule. This meant he only played 7 matches that season.

After the Injury

Because of his Achilles injury, Jason missed the whole 2010 ITM Cup. He was not chosen for the Highlanders team in the 2011 Super Rugby season.
