Jason Macdonald's Rugby Journey
Playing for Otago
Jason Macdonald was one of the players who stayed with the Otago team for a long time. He first played for Otago in 2002. He was a key part of the team for many years. Sadly, he missed the entire 2010 ITM Cup season. This was because he got hurt during the 2010 Super 14 rugby season.
Playing in Super Rugby
Starting with the Highlanders
Jason joined the Highlanders team for the 2006 Super 14 season. This was a big step up in his career. He played his first game as a starter for the club that year. He also scored his very first try in Super Rugby. Over the next two seasons, Jason became a more regular player for the Highlanders. By the 2008 season, he was the team's main hooker. He started 10 out of 13 matches that year.
Moving to the Crusaders
Before the 2009 Super 14 season, something surprising happened. Jason was available to be picked by other teams. The Crusaders team chose him. This turned out to be his most successful Super Rugby season. He started 12 matches for the Crusaders. He filled in for the injured All-Black player Corey Flynn. Jason even played in the team's semi-final game against the Bulls.
Back with the Highlanders
For the 2010 season, Jason Macdonald returned to play for the Highlanders. He mostly came off the bench as a substitute. Another player, Jason Rutledge, was the main starting hooker. Jason's season ended early because of an Achilles injury. He got hurt while playing club rugby during a break in the Super Rugby schedule. This injury meant he could only play in 7 matches that season.
After the Injury
Because of his serious Achilles tendon injury, Jason missed the whole 2010 ITM Cup season. He was not chosen to be part of the Highlanders team for the 2011 Super Rugby season.
