Jatz is a famous brand of cracker from Australia. Made by the company Arnott's Biscuits, these snacks first appeared in stores in 1952.
Jatz crackers are small, round biscuits, about 5 centimeters across. They have a fun, wavy edge and a little bit of salt sprinkled on top. People in Australia love to eat them with toppings like cheese, cabanossi sausage, and Vegemite. They are also great for scooping up dips.
Besides the original flavor, you can also find Jatz in other types, including cracked pepper and fat-free versions.
Jatz vs. Savoy: A Tale of Two Crackers
Another very similar cracker in Australia is called Savoy. Savoys were first made in 1938 by a company called Brockhoff Biscuits. For a long time, Jatz and Savoy were rivals, with people often choosing a favorite.
In 1963, Arnott's and Brockhoff joined together to become one company. Instead of getting rid of one of the crackers, they decided to keep selling both Jatz and Savoy.
What's the Difference?
Today, the crackers are still sold with their different brand names. They look and taste very similar, but there is a small difference in the recipe.
- Jatz crackers are made with full cream milk powder and malt, which gives them a special flavor.
- Savoy crackers use golden syrup instead, which makes them slightly different.
Even with this small change, both crackers remain popular snacks across Australia.
