Jaume Huguet facts for kids

Jaume Huguet (born around 1412, died 1492) was a famous painter from Catalonia, a region in Spain. He was known for his beautiful paintings, especially those found in churches.
Jaume was born in a town called Valls. When he was young, he moved to Tarragona to live with his uncle, Pere Huguet. His uncle was also a painter, and he taught Jaume a lot. Later, they moved to Barcelona. Here, Jaume saw many new and exciting art styles. He also worked in other cities like Zaragoza and Tarragona. He was inspired by the "Flemish style," which was a popular way of painting from a region called Flanders (now part of Belgium and the Netherlands).
Some of Huguet's amazing artworks can still be seen today. One of his large altarpieces, called a retablo, is in the Monastery of Pedralbes. Another important painting, Adoration of the Magi, is in the Chapel of St. Agatha in Barcelona's Palau Reial Major. Many of his works, including The Consecration of Saint Augustine, are kept at the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya in Barcelona.
About Jaume Huguet
Jaume Huguet was born around 1412 in Valls. Sadly, he became an orphan in 1419. His father, Antoni Huguet, arranged for Jaume and his brother, also named Antoni, to be looked after by their uncle, Pere Huguet.
Pere Huguet was a painter himself. He became Jaume's teacher and helped him learn how to paint. Jaume likely started his art training in a workshop, learning the basics. After this first stage, he would have continued his training with a well-known painter, though we don't know exactly who that was.
His Artistic Journey
We believe Jaume Huguet started painting when he was young. However, we don't have official papers about his work until 1448. In that year, he gave his brother permission to collect money for him. He also had to cancel a job painting an altarpiece for a town called Arbeca.
Also in 1448, Huguet moved his painting workshop to Barcelona. His first official painting job was in 1454. He was asked to paint the main altarpiece for the Church of Sant Antoni Abat in Barcelona. Sadly, this beautiful artwork was destroyed in 1909.
In 1455, he got a contract to paint two parts of the main altarpiece for the Church of Ripoll Monastery. He also worked on the altarpiece of Saint Abdon and Saint Senan for the Church of Sant Pere in Terrassa, finishing it in 1460.
Important Works and Later Life
Jaume Huguet became a very popular artist. Even the King of Catalonia and Aragon asked him to paint! He worked on the Epiphany Altarpiece for the main altar of the Chapel of the Palau Reial Major in Barcelona in 1464 and 1465.
He also painted the main part of the altarpiece for the Chapel of the Esparto Workers' and Glazier's Guild in Barcelona Cathedral. He finished this piece in 1468. In 1465, Huguet started painting the altarpiece of Saint Anne, Saint Bartholomew, and Saint Mary Magdalene. This project took a long time and wasn't finished until 1480. This shows that many people likely worked together to complete such a large piece of art.
