Jaume Nomen Torres, also known as Jaime Nomen, is a Spanish scientist born on June 23, 1960, in Tortosa, Catalonia. He is a special kind of doctor who works on faces and jaws (an oral and maxillofacial surgeon). He is also a very keen amateur astronomer who has discovered many small space rocks called minor planets.

Discovering Space Rocks

Jaume Nomen is famous for finding many asteroids. Asteroids are small rocky objects that orbit the Sun. He has discovered more than 60 of these space rocks, and 55 of them have been officially named and cataloged.

One of his most notable discoveries was a near-Earth asteroid named 367943 Duende. He was part of the OAM team (Observatorio Astronómico de Mallorca) that found this asteroid during a project called the La Sagra Sky Survey. An asteroid, 56561 Jaimenomen, was even named after him to honor his work!

Astronomy Projects and Teaching

Besides discovering asteroids, Jaume Nomen is also a professor at the University of Barcelona. He is an active member of GEA, which stands for Grup d'Estudis Astronòmics (Astronomical Studies Group) in Barcelona.

He also leads an exciting project called the Unicorn Project 3SSS. This project uses three automatic telescopes, each 61 centimeters wide. These telescopes are located at the Piera Observatory, l'Ametlla de Mar Observatory, and Costitx Observatory. Their main goal is to find and study even more asteroids in space. This helps scientists learn more about our solar system.
