Jaume Nomen facts for kids
Jaume Nomen Torres (born June 23, 1960) is a Spanish doctor and an amateur astronomer. He is from Catalonia, a region in Spain. He is famous for finding many minor planets, which are small objects orbiting the Sun.
Nomen is a special kind of doctor called an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. This means he is a surgeon who works on the face, mouth, and jaw. But he is also very passionate about space!
He became well-known when he helped discover a near-Earth asteroid called 367943 Duende. He was part of the OAM team (Observatorio Astronómico de Mallorca) when they found it during the La Sagra Sky Survey. An asteroid, 56561 Jaimenomen, was even named after him!
Jaume Nomen is a very active astronomer. He has found more than sixty asteroids, and 55 of them have been officially numbered and recognized. He also teaches at the University of Barcelona. He is an important member of GEA, which stands for Grup d'Estudis Astronòmics (Astronomical Studies Group) in Barcelona.
He leads a special project called the Unicorn Project 3SSS. This project uses three automatic telescopes, each 61 centimeters wide. These telescopes are located at the Piera Observatory, l'Ametlla de Mar Observatory, and Costitx Observatory. Their main goal is to find and study new asteroids in space.
