Jaume Vicens i Vives facts for kids
Jaume Vicens Vives (born June 6, 1910, in Girona, Spain – died June 28, 1960, in Lyon, France) was an important Spanish historian. Many people consider him, along with Pierre Vilar, to be one of the most influential Catalan historians of the 20th century.
His work helped shape how people understood the history of Catalonia and Spain. He was known for his modern way of looking at history, focusing on society and economics, not just kings and wars.
A Book That Changed Things
One of Vicens Vives's most famous books was Notícia de Catalunya, published in 1954. This book was very important because it explored the history and identity of Catalonia.
This book directly inspired another famous writer, Joan Fuster. Fuster's 1962 book, Nosaltres, els valencians, was originally going to be called Nosaltres els catalans. However, because of strict rules and censorship during the Franco era, the name was changed. Fuster's book followed a similar structure and purpose to Vicens Vives's work.
Notícia de Catalunya also had a big impact on Jordi Pujol, who later became a very important political leader in Catalonia. Vicens Vives was also a friend and mentor to another historian, Juan Reglá.
