Jaume D'Agramunt: A Doctor in Difficult Times

Jaume D'Agramunt was a skilled doctor and a writer from Catalonia. He lived during a very challenging period in history. He worked in the city of Lleida, which is located in what is now Spain.

Facing the Black Death

In the mid-1300s, a terrible sickness called the Black Death spread across Europe. This disease caused many people to become very ill and sadly, many died. It was a scary time for everyone.

On April 23, 1348, as the Black Death was reaching Lleida, Jaume D'Agramunt wrote an important book. He gave this book to the Mayor of Lleida. The book was called Regiment de preservacio de pestilència, which means Directions for Protection from the Plague.

What Was the Regiment de Preservacio de Pestilencia?

Jaume D'Agramunt's book was special because it was the first medical text ever written in the Catalan language. In this book, he tried to explain the illness in detail. He also suggested ways people could try to protect themselves from getting sick.

At that time, doctors often combined their medical knowledge with other beliefs. Jaume D'Agramunt's book included ideas from "natural philosophy," which was how people understood the world around them back then. It also had some ideas about how the stars and planets (astrology) might affect health.

Sadly, even with his knowledge, Jaume D'Agramunt himself became one of the first people to die when the Black Death hit Lleida.
