About Javier Gomá

Javier studied many subjects. He has degrees in Classical Philology and Law. He also has a PhD in Philosophy.

In 1993, he started working for the Spanish Council of State. This is a group that advises the Spanish government. In 1996, he began working at the Juan March Foundation in Madrid. He became the director of this foundation in 2003. He still holds this important job today.

Javier Gomá is a member of the boards of the Teatro Real (Madrid's opera house) and the Teatro Abadía. He has given many talks at different places. He also often writes for newspapers and magazines. Some people even compare him to Ortega y Gasset, a famous Spanish philosopher.

His Books

Javier Gomá has written many books. His philosophical works are mainly in two groups.

Tetralogy of Exemplarity

This is a series of four books. It is called Tetralogía de la ejemplaridad in Spanish. It means "Tetralogy of Exemplarity." These books explore what it means to be a good example.

  • Imitación y experiencia (Imitation and experience) (2003)
  • Aquiles en el gineceo (Achilles in the gynaeceum) (2007)
  • Ejemplaridad pública (Public exemplarity) (2009)
  • Necesario pero imposible (Necessary but impossible) (2013)

His first book, Imitation and experience, won a big award. It received the 2004 Spanish National Literature Award for non-Fiction.

Worldly Philosophy

This collection is called Filosofía mundana in Spanish. It means "Worldly Philosophy." It includes many short essays. These essays first appeared in Spanish newspapers like El País and La Vanguardia.

Other Works

Javier Gomá has also written other books. These include Ingenuidad aprendida (Learned naïveté) and La imagen de tu vida (The image of your life). The book La imagen de tu vida includes essays about how we are remembered after we are gone. It also has a play he wrote called Inconsolable.

Plays

Javier Gomá has written plays too. His play Inconsolable was first published in a newspaper. It was later performed on stage in Madrid in 2017. It was also shown in Bilbao and Barcelona.

He has written a theatrical trilogy. This means a series of three plays. The plays are:

  • Inconsolable
  • Quiero cansarme contigo, o el peligro de las buenas compañías (I want to get tired with you, or the danger of good company)
  • Las lágrimas de Jerjes (Xerxes' tears)

This trilogy is called Un hombre de cincuenta años (A man of 50).

Family Life

Javier Gomá has two brothers, Ignacio and Fernando. They are both notaries in Madrid. They also help run a blog about legal and political topics.
