Mathew Jay Roach (born June 14, 1957) is an American filmmaker. He is famous for directing many popular movies. These include the Austin Powers comedy films and Meet the Parents. He also directed serious films like Trumbo and Bombshell.

Jay Roach has also directed and produced important TV movies. These include Recount, Game Change, and All the Way. For his work, he has won four Primetime Emmy Awards.

Early Life and Education

Jay Roach grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in the U.S. His father worked for the military. He finished Eldorado High School in 1975.

He then went to Stanford University. In 1980, he earned a degree in economics. Later, in 1986, he studied film production. He received a special degree in film from the University of Southern California.

Filmmaking Career

Jay Roach started his career working on music videos. His first job was as a cameraman for a music video in 1988. He directed his first comedy movie, Zoo Radio, in 1990.

Directing Hit Comedies

Roach became well-known for the spy comedy Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997). This movie starred Mike Myers as the main character. He also directed the two sequels: Austin Powers: The Spy Who ... Me (1999) and Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002). These movies were very successful.

He also directed other popular comedies. These include Meet the Parents (2000) and its sequel Meet the Fockers (2004). Other comedies he directed are Dinner for Schmucks (2010) and The Campaign (2012).

Directing Dramatic Films

Jay Roach has also directed serious films. He directed Trumbo (2015), which tells a true story. He also directed Bombshell (2019). Both of these films received many important awards.

Political TV Dramas

Roach has received much praise for his political TV movies for HBO. He directed Recount (2008). This film won him two Primetime Emmy Awards. He also won a Directors Guild of America Award for it.

He then directed Game Change (2012). This movie was about the 2008 U.S. presidential campaign. It became one of the most-watched films on HBO. This film also won him more Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe Award. In 2016, he directed All the Way, which also earned him Emmy nominations.

Personal Life

Jay Roach is married to Susanna Hoffs. She is a musician and actress from the band The Bangles. They have two sons together. Before marrying Susanna, Jay Roach changed his religion to Judaism.
