About Jean-Pol Martin

Jean-Pol Martin was born in Paris in 1943. He moved to Germany in 1968. He studied the German and French languages. He wanted to become a teacher for German schools. In 1980, he started teaching at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt in Bavaria. Here, he helped train new French teachers.

He earned his first university degree in Paris in 1969. Then, he studied more languages at the University of Erlangen–Nuremberg. From 1975 to 1980, he worked as a French and German teacher in different schools. In 1985, he earned his Ph.D. This is a very high university degree. He became a full professor in 2000.

Learning by Teaching (LdL)

Jean-Pol Martin is most famous for creating the "learning by teaching" method. In German, this is called Lernen durch Lehren (LdL). This idea is simple: students learn best when they teach others. Imagine you have to explain a topic to your friends. To do this well, you first need to understand it very deeply yourself!

This method became very popular in schools across Germany. In the 1990s, universities also started using it. Now, LdL is used in many different subjects and in countries all over the world. It helps students become more active in their learning. They don't just listen; they become the teachers!

New Human Rights

Since 2016, Jean-Pol Martin has also been working on a new idea called "New Human Rights." These rights are based on what people truly need to live well. He believes that everyone has basic needs. These include:

  • Thinking clearly
  • Staying healthy
  • Feeling safe
  • Being part of a group
  • Being able to achieve their goals
  • Finding meaning in life

This idea helps us understand human rights in a new way. It focuses on making sure everyone's basic needs are met.
