Jean Chatillon (born September 13, 1937 – died January 16, 2019) was a talented Canadian composer and music teacher. He created many musical pieces and helped students learn about music.
Early Life
Jean Chatillon was born in 1937 in Nicolet, Quebec, Canada. He grew up in a family where music was very important.
When he was 14, in 1951, he started playing the piano. He also began to write his own music. At first, he taught himself. Later, he studied music seriously with a famous teacher named Conrad Letendre in Montreal.
His Career in Music
In 1969, Jean Chatillon helped start the Music Section at the University of Quebec in Trois-Rivières. He taught music there for many years, until 1981.
In 1970, he also helped create the "Institut de sciences musicales Conrad Letendre." This institute was named after his former teacher. He worked with Michel Perrault to set it up.
After he stopped teaching in 1981, he spent all his time creating music. He wrote more than 300 musical pieces and literary works. He was recognized as an Associate Composer by the Canadian Music Centre. This means his music is supported and promoted.
In 2003, the University of Quebec gave him the title of Professor Emeritus. This is a special honor for retired professors who have done great work.
In 2004, Jean Chatillon became a founding member of the Delian Society. This group works to bring back tonal music. Tonal music is a style of music that uses clear keys and harmonies.
Jean Chatillon passed away on January 16, 2019, in Trois-Rivières.
