Jean Smith's Career
Music Journey
Jean Smith helped start the band Mecca Normal in 1981. She formed the band with David Lester. They met while working at a newspaper in Vancouver.
Mecca Normal is seen as an important band that came before the riot grrrl movement of the 1990s. The riot grrrl movement was about young women using music to share their ideas and stand up for themselves. Mecca Normal's music often had strong political messages.
Painting and Art Projects
Jean Smith also creates art, especially self-portraits. She uses different ways to make these, like watercolor paintings, videos, and photos.
One of her short films is called Attraction is Ephemeral. This film uses photos from her online dating profiles. The title of the film is also the name of a song from Mecca Normal's 2006 album, The Observer.
Since 2016, Jean Smith has been selling her paintings online. She posts a new painting on Facebook each day. She does this to raise money for a special project. She wants to create a place in Vancouver where other artists can come and work. This is called an artist residency.
