Jean Tharaud (born May 9, 1877 – died April 8, 1952) was a well-known French writer. He was born in a town called Saint-Junien, located in Haute-Vienne, France. Jean Tharaud became famous for his many books.

Working with His Brother

When Jean Tharaud was a young man, he worked for Maurice Barrès, who was another important French writer and politician. Jean Tharaud spent more than 50 years writing books with his brother, Jérôme Tharaud. They were a very successful writing team.

A Famous Award

In 1906, Jean and Jérôme Tharaud won a very important French literary award called the Prix Goncourt. They received this prize for their book titled Dingley, l'illustre écrivain. Winning the Prix Goncourt showed how talented they were as writers.

Joining the Académie française

The Académie française is a very old and respected French group. Its job is to protect the French language and arts. In 1946, Jean Tharaud was chosen to become a member of this special academy. He was the eighteenth person to hold "seat 4" in the Académie. His brother, Jérôme, had also become a member earlier, in 1938.

Jean Tharaud passed away in Paris in 1952.
