Jean de Marigny's Life
Jean de Marigny started his church career when he was quite young. He quickly rose through the ranks. In 1313, he became the bishop of Beauvais. A bishop is a high-ranking leader in the Christian church. For the next twenty years, he was a very important church leader in France. He was especially liked by King Philip VI.
Building Beauvais Cathedral
In 1335, Jean de Marigny focused on finishing a part of Beauvais Cathedral. This part was called the choir. The cathedral had huge windows filled with beautiful stained glass. This building work created one of the most famous Gothic buildings in Europe. However, this work was interrupted by the Hundred Years' War.
Role in the Hundred Years' War
Jean de Marigny was a good manager and a skilled leader. He was not just a religious figure. In 1341, King Philip VI made him one of his main helpers in southern France. His job was to fight against the English invasion.
His most important military action happened in 1346. The English army had taken over much of the countryside. They reached the walls of Beauvais and started a siege. A siege is when an army surrounds a city to try and capture it. Jean de Marigny successfully defended Beauvais. He held out against the English attack.
Becoming Archbishop of Rouen
As a reward for defending Beauvais, Jean de Marigny was made archbishop of Rouen in 1347. An archbishop is an even higher church leader than a bishop. He enjoyed these new honors for only three years before he passed away.
