Jeannie Berlin (born Jeannie Brette May on November 1, 1949) is an American actress and screenwriter who has appeared in movies, television shows, and stage plays. She is the daughter of the famous actress and director Elaine May.
Berlin is most famous for her role in the 1972 comedy movie The Heartbreak Kid. Her performance was so good that she was nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress. She has also acted in many other films, including Margaret (2011), Inherent Vice (2014), and The Fabelmans (2022).

Jeannie Berlin was born in Los Angeles, California. Her mother is Elaine May, a well-known actress, comedian, and director. Her father was an inventor named Marvin May.
When Jeannie started her acting career, she decided to use her mother's original last name, Berlin, as her professional name, which is also called a stage name.
Her mother, Elaine May, directed the movie The Heartbreak Kid. Jeannie's role in that film made her famous and earned her major award nominations.
Acting Career
Starting in Film and TV
Berlin began her acting career in 1969. She first appeared in a TV movie called In Name Only. Soon after, she started acting in movies. Some of her early films include Getting Straight (1970), The Baby Maker (1970), and Bone (1972).
In 1972, she starred in The Heartbreak Kid. Her performance was a huge success. Many movie critics said she looked and acted just like her mother, Elaine May. For this role, she won the National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Supporting Actress.
In 1975, Berlin had the main role in the movie Sheila Levine Is Dead and Living in New York. The next year, she guest-starred in an episode of the popular detective show Columbo.
Return to Acting
After a long break from movies and TV, Berlin returned in 1990. She co-wrote and acted in the movie In the Spirit, which also starred her mother.
During the 1990s and 2000s, she acted in several plays in New York City. In 2011, she returned to film in the drama Margaret. Critics praised her performance, and she was nominated for several awards.
Since then, Berlin has appeared in many popular movies and TV shows. She acted in the crime movie Inherent Vice (2014) and the comedy Café Society (2016).
Recent Roles
In 2016, Berlin played a prosecutor (a type of lawyer) in the HBO show The Night Of. Her performance was highly praised. From 2019 to 2023, she had a recurring role in the hit HBO series Succession.
She also appeared in the Amazon Prime series Hunters in 2020. In 2022, she was part of the cast of The Fabelmans, a movie directed by the famous Steven Spielberg.
