Life and Writing Career
Early Life and Education
Jeff Lindsay was born in Miami, Florida. He went to Ransom Everglades School and graduated in 1970. After high school, he attended Middlebury College in Vermont, finishing in 1975.
For many of his early books, he wrote with his wife, Hilary Hemingway. She is also an author and is the niece of the famous writer Ernest Hemingway. Today, Lindsay and his wife live in Cape Coral, Florida, and they have three children.
The Famous 'Dexter' Series
The first book about Dexter was called Darkly Dreaming Dexter. Lindsay originally had a different title in mind, "Pinocchio Bleeds," which his daughter suggested. However, his publisher decided on the final title.
The book was nominated for a big award from the Mystery Writers of America. But it was removed from the list when they found out Lindsay had already published other books under his real name, Jeffry P. Lindsay.
From Book to Television
The Dexter books were adapted into a hit TV series on the Showtime network. Actor Michael C. Hall played the main character. The first season of the show followed the story of the first book. Later seasons told new stories that were different from the books.
Lindsay even made a brief appearance, called a cameo, in an episode of the show's third season. He also helped write a Dexter comic book series for Marvel Comics.
