Jenico Preston's Life

Early Years and Exile

Jenico Preston was the son of Nicholas Preston, the 6th Viscount Gormanston. When his father passed away in 1643, Jenico became the 7th Viscount Gormanston.

In 1647, young Jenico attended a Jesuit school in Kilkenny. A few years later, in 1651, he had to leave Ireland. This happened because forces loyal to the King were defeated by Oliver Cromwell's army. Jenico's family lands were taken away during this time. He went into exile with King Charles II.

Returning Home and New Roles

When King Charles II returned to power in 1660, Jenico's family lands in Gormanston were given back to him. This was a big relief for the family.

In September 1685, Jenico joined the Irish Army as a Lieutenant. He was promoted to Captain in March 1686. He also asked King James II to clear his father's name, which had been officially declared "outlawed." King James II agreed. In 1686, Jenico became a member of the Privy Council of Ireland. This was a group of important advisors to the King.

He continued to take on more roles. In 1687, he became an Alderman of Drogheda. Then, in 1689, he was made a Burgess of Athboy. From 1689 to 1691, Viscount Gormanston served as the Lord Lieutenant of Meath. This meant he was the King's main representative in that county.

Military Service and Later Life

As a member of the Irish House of Lords, Jenico took part in the Patriot Parliament in 1689. This was a special parliament called by King James II. In 1690, he was also appointed a Commissioner of the Treasury. This role involved managing government money.

Jenico Preston was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel in the Irish Army. He fought in important battles in 1690, including the Battle of Cavan and the famous Battle of the Boyne.

Sadly, Jenico Preston died on March 17, 1691, during the Siege of Limerick. He did not have any sons, so his nephew, Jenico Preston (1640–1697), became the 8th Viscount Gormanston.

Jenico Preston was married twice. His first wife, Lady Frances Leke, passed away in 1682 without having any children. With his second wife, Margaret Molyneux, he had one daughter named Mary Preston.

After his death, King William III declared Jenico Preston an "outlaw" in April 1691. This meant his title was officially taken away. However, the title was later given back to the family in 1800.
