Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Jenkin Lloyd (born in 1624) was a Welsh clergyman (a religious leader) and a politician. He served in the House of Commons, which is like a part of the government, in 1654.

Early Life and Education

Jenkin Lloyd was the son of John Lloyd and Margaret Herbert. He grew up in Wales. When he was 16, in 1640, he started studying at Jesus College, Oxford, a famous university. He earned a special degree called a Master of Arts (MA) in 1648.

Working for the Government

Jenkin Lloyd might have worked as a messenger for the Council of State in 1650 and 1651. The Council of State was an important group that helped run the country at that time. He also served as a chaplain, which is like a religious advisor, to Oliver Cromwell. Cromwell was a very powerful leader in England during that period.

A Member of Parliament

In 1654, Jenkin Lloyd was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for Cardiganshire. This meant he represented his area in the First Protectorate Parliament. This Parliament was a special government assembly during the time Oliver Cromwell was in charge.

As an MP, Jenkin Lloyd lived in official housing provided by the government. He also worked on important issues. For example, he asked the government to remove ministers and schoolteachers in Wales who were causing problems. He also helped look into a request from people in Haverfordwest about choosing new officials.

Jenkin Lloyd and another MP from his area also asked three times for the taxes in Cardiganshire to be lowered between 1654 and 1656. This shows he was working to help the people he represented.

Later Life

In 1661, Jenkin Lloyd received another high degree from Oxford University, called a Doctor of Divinity (DD). In the same year, he became a rector (a type of priest) in Llandyssul and a vicar (another type of priest) in Llanfihangel Ystrad.
