Jenny Maria Wallerstedt (born 1870, died 1963) was an important Swedish woman. She was a schoolteacher who also fought for women's rights. Jenny was a strong supporter of women getting the right to vote. She was also a politician in her city. Many remember her as the main person who pushed for women's votes in Linköping.

For 16 years, she led the local group of the National Association for Women's Suffrage (LKPR). This group worked to get women the right to vote. In 1919, she became a member of the city council in Linköping. She was part of the Moderate Party.

Early Life and Education

Jenny Maria Wallerstedt was born on April 11, 1870. Her birthplace was Lungsund, a small village in Värmland County, Sweden. When she was 20 years old, Jenny finished her studies. She graduated from the Royal Teachers' Seminary in Stockholm. This school trained people to become teachers.

A Career in Teaching

In 1890, Jenny started her teaching career. She taught English and French at the Linköping's Elementary Girls' School. She was very good at languages. Jenny even wrote textbooks for English and French. She also cared a lot about school issues.

Fighting for Women's Rights

Jenny Wallerstedt was a key person in the fight for women's rights. From 1903, she led the local group of the National Association of Women's Suffrage (LKPR). This group worked to give women the right to vote. Later, she joined the main board of the LKPR. She represented the Östergötland region.

Her language skills helped her a lot. She went to international meetings about women's right to vote. There, she met activists from Germany, Britain, France, and the United States. She was very impressed by the women in England. They were called suffragettes. Jenny shared their ideas with the Linköping group. She also worked with the Fredrika Bremer Association. This group also focused on women's rights. Jenny also helped a committee in Linköping that supported poor people.

Becoming a Politician

In 1919, Jenny Wallerstedt made history. She was elected to the Linköping City Council. She joined three other women: Sigrid Örn, Sigrid Tersmeden, and Hedvig Thorell. This was a big step for women in politics. In the same year, she became the principal of Risberg Girls' High School in Örebro. She worked there until 1927.

Later Life

Jenny Wallerstedt passed away on January 8, 1963. She died in Örgryte, a part of Gothenburg. She is remembered for her important work as a teacher and a champion for women's rights.
