Jerónimo de Cáncer y Velasco (born around 1599 – died 1655) was a famous playwright from Spain. He lived during a special time called the Spanish Golden Age. This was a period when Spanish art and literature were at their best.

A Talented Writer

Jerónimo de Cáncer was friends with many famous playwrights of his time. These included Moreto, Pedro Rosete Niño, and Antonio Huerta. He was known for being very clever and quick-witted. He loved to improvise and use surprising wordplay in his writing.

One person, Fray Andrés Ferro de Valdecebo, said he was the first to "make puns with soul." Puns are a type of joke that uses words with more than one meaning. Jerónimo de Cáncer was very good at this.

His Plays

Jerónimo de Cáncer wrote some plays by himself. Two of his well-known plays were Baldovinos and Mocedades del Cid. Mocedades del Cid was a funny play.

Many of his works were written quickly. He often worked with other writers like Rosete and Martínez. Together, they wrote plays such as The Ark of Noah and San Ginés. These plays were a mix of his own ideas and parts he borrowed from other works. They were often created to earn money quickly.
