Jérôme Lagarrigue was born in Paris, France. His father was an illustrator and painter. His mother was a journalist and writer. When he was a child, he went to school in France. But he spent his summers in New York City. This is where he lives today.

He studied at the Rhode Island School of Design. He graduated in 1996. He focused on illustration there. After two years, he became a professor. He taught drawing and painting at the Parsons School of Design.

In 2002, Jérôme Lagarrigue won a special prize. It was the John Steptoe Award for New Talent. He received it for his illustrations in the book Freedom Summer.
