The Start of Jeruel Academy

Jeruel Academy began in 1881. At first, classes were held in a place called Landrum Chapel. This chapel was part of the Ebenezer Baptist Church, West. The school was started by a person named the Reverend Collins Henry Lyons. He wanted to create a good place for students to learn.

In 1886, the school got its own building. This new building was a big step forward for Jeruel Academy. It showed that the school was growing and becoming more important.

What Students Learned

Students at Jeruel Academy learned many different subjects. They studied important skills like English and mathematics. They also learned about history.

The school offered unique classes too. Students could learn languages like Greek, Latin, and French. They also learned practical skills such as agriculture, sewing, and cooking. Music and printing were also part of the lessons. These courses helped students prepare for many different jobs and futures.

Important People at the School

Many teachers at Jeruel Academy had studied at Atlanta Baptist College. This meant the students were taught by well-educated people.

One student named Hampton Collins Moon went to Jeruel Academy. He also worked there as a "steward." A steward helps manage things and keep the school running smoothly. Hampton Collins Moon worked to earn money while he studied.

The School's Legacy

In 1924, Jeruel Academy joined with three other schools. They became part of a new school called Union Baptist Institute. This merger helped create a larger educational center.

Later, during a time when schools were becoming desegregated (meaning students of all races could attend the same schools), Union Baptist Institute closed. The original Jeruel Academy building was taken down in 1956.

Today, the place where Jeruel Academy once stood is part of the University of Georgia campus. A special marker is there to remember the school. This marker helps people learn about the important history of Jeruel Academy and its role in education.
