Blasco's Early Career in Comics
Jesús Blasco started his career in 1935 when he was just 15 years old. His first work appeared in a Spanish magazine called Mickey. He later created a popular series and character named Cuto for the magazine Boliche.
The Adventures of Cuto
The Cuto comic strip first started like a simple cartoon about a boy. But soon, Cuto became a boy adventurer who traveled all over the world and even through time! He would use guns and drive cool sports cars. He even had romantic adventures with adult women.
Blasco's Art Style
Blasco's art could change a lot. He drew cute animal cartoons. But he also created very realistic drawings with lots of shadows, like the famous artists Milton Caniff and Noel Sickles. He made comics for different groups of people. For example, he created Anita Diminuta, which was a comic strip about a girl.
Working in British Comics
In the 1960s, Blasco started working with a British company called Fleetway. This helped his comics become known in many other countries. In 1968, he helped create a cartoon called Los Guerilleros for a Belgian magazine named Spirou.
Famous Comic Creations
Blasco worked on popular strips like Steel Claw and Buffalo Bill. These led him to work with writer Pat Mills. Together, they created Invasion! for the very first issue of the famous comic magazine 2000AD in 1977.
In the 1970s, Blasco also drew many Western comics, like Tex Willer. These comics had a style similar to Alex Toth's art. Blasco also helped create the comic strip Capitán Trueno. This comic has influenced the look of many other comics from Japan and Europe. For example, it influenced The Mysterious Cities of Gold.
Other Artistic Works
Besides comics, Blasco also drew pictures for fairy tales. He even designed tarrocci cards, which are a type of playing card.
Blasco's Work in the United States
Jesús Blasco's work is not very well known in the United States. He had three stories appear in a comic magazine called Creepy, published by Warren Publishing. However, his work was wrongly credited to other artists in those issues.
