Who Was Jesús Jiménez Zamora?
Jesús Jiménez Zamora was born in Cartago, Costa Rica. He grew up to become a very important leader for his country. He is remembered for some big decisions he made while in office. He also had a son who would later become president too.
First Time as President (1863-1866)
In 1863, Jesús Jiménez Zamora was chosen by the people to be president. This was a democratic election. However, just two months into his term, he made a big change. He decided to dissolve the Congress. This meant he ended the legislative body that helps make laws.
During this time, he also offered a safe place to Gerardo Barrios, a former president of El Salvador. This decision caused problems with other countries in Central America. The governments of four other Central American nations stopped talking to Costa Rica. They broke off their diplomatic relations.
At the end of his term in 1866, President Jiménez Zamora followed the rules. He peacefully handed over the presidency to José María Castro Madriz. This showed a respect for the democratic process at that time.
Second Time as President (1868-1870)
Even though he had passed on the presidency peacefully, Jesús Jiménez Zamora returned to power two years later. In 1868, he led a coup d'état. A coup d'état is when someone takes control of the government by force, instead of through an election. He overthrew President José María Castro Madriz and became president for the second time.
His second time as president did not last as long. It also ended suddenly. On April 27, 1870, another coup took place, and he was removed from office. This marked the end of his time as president of Costa Rica.
His Family
Jesús Jiménez Zamora had a famous son. His son was named Ricardo Jiménez Oreamuno. Interestingly, Ricardo also followed in his father's footsteps. He went on to become the President of Costa Rica three different times. This made them one of the few father-son pairs to both lead the country.
