Romualdo Ricardo Jiménez Oreamuno (born February 6, 1859 – died January 4, 1945) was a very important leader in Costa Rica. He served as president of the country three times. His terms were from 1910 to 1914, 1924 to 1928, and 1932 to 1936.

Ricardo Jiménez was known as one of the best lawyers in Costa Rican history. He studied at the University of Santo Tomás. His father, Jesús Jiménez, was also president of Costa Rica twice.

First Term as President (1910-1914)

Ricardo Jiménez became president for the first time in 1910. Just before he took office, a powerful earthquake hit the province of Cartago. This earthquake destroyed most of the city and sadly, hundreds of people died.

Rebuilding Cartago

One of his main challenges was to rebuild Cartago, which was the biggest city in the country at that time. To make buildings safer, President Jiménez made a new rule. He outlawed construction using adobe, a type of mud brick. This helped ensure stronger buildings for the future.

Managing National Debt

Another important thing he did during his first term was to manage Costa Rica's foreign debt. He worked to pay back a large part of the money the country owed, especially to France. This helped make Costa Rica's economy stronger.

Second Term as President (1924-1928)

Ricardo Jiménez was elected president again in 1924. During this term, he focused on creating new institutions and improving services for the people.

New Institutions and Services

  • He created the National Insurance Bank. This bank helped protect people and businesses.
  • He also started The Bank of Mortgage Credit. This bank helped people get loans to buy homes.
  • He founded the School of Agriculture. This school helped teach people about farming.
  • He established the Ministry of Health. This new government department worked to improve public health.

Infrastructure Improvements

President Jiménez also started big projects to improve the country's infrastructure. He began the electrification of the Pacific railway system. This made train travel more modern and efficient. He also started building the Pacific port of Puntarenas. This port was important for trade and shipping goods. After this term, he took a break from politics for four years.

Third Term as President (1932-1936)

Ricardo Jiménez was elected president for his third and final term in 1932. In this term, he focused on building up the country's infrastructure and improving education.

Building Schools and Roads

He built several large buildings to house schools. This helped more children get an education. He also worked on improving existing roads and building new ones across the country. Better roads made it easier for people to travel and transport goods.

Water Systems and Bridges

He constructed an aqueduct system. This system brought water from the central valley, starting at Ojo de Agua, all the way to the Pacific Ocean at Puntarenas. This was a huge project that provided water to many areas. During his time, a bridge connecting Filadelfia and Liberia was built. The Old National Theater was also constructed during his administration.

Later Life and Legacy

Ricardo Jiménez Oreamuno passed away in San José on January 4, 1945. He is remembered as a president who worked hard to rebuild his country after a disaster, improve its finances, and develop its infrastructure and education system.
