Jessie Alexandra Dick, often called J Alix Dick, was a Scottish artist and teacher. She was born on July 13, 1896, and passed away in 1976. Jessie Dick was well-known for her beautiful paintings. She created portraits and still-life art. She used both oil paints and watercolours in her work.

Life of Jessie Alexandra Dick

Jessie Dick was the youngest of eleven children. She grew up in Largs, Scotland. Her father worked as the head gardener there. He was employed on the estate of Lord Kelvin, a famous scientist.

Art Education and Career

Jessie Dick studied art at the Glasgow School of Art. She attended from 1915 to 1919. After finishing her studies, she joined the school's teaching staff. This happened in 1921. She taught painting and drawing for many years. Jessie Dick stayed at the Glasgow School of Art until she retired in 1959.

She was also an active member of the Glasgow Society of Lady Artists. In 1960, she became an associate member of the Royal Scottish Academy. This was a big honor for her.

Exhibitions and Recognition

Jessie Dick often showed her artwork in exhibitions. She displayed her pieces with the Royal Watercolour Society. She also exhibited with the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers. Her work was also seen at the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts.

Later Life and Legacy

Jessie Dick died in 1976. She had a fall at her home in Clarkston, Scotland. She lived there with one of her sisters.

For many years, a large portrait she painted hung at the Glasgow School of Art. It was called Self Portrait in the Studio. Sadly, this painting was lost in a fire in 2014. The fire badly damaged the school building.

After her death, some of her watercolour paintings were almost thrown away. Luckily, a neighbor saved them. Today, the McLean Museum and Art Gallery in Greenock has some of her artworks.

Teaching at Glasgow School of Art

Alix Dick taught at the Glasgow School of Art (GSA) for many years. She started teaching in 1922. She continued until her retirement in 1959. During her time there, she held various teaching roles.

Jessie Dick taught many different art subjects. She helped students learn drawing and painting. She also taught about composition, which is how you arrange elements in a picture. Her classes included landscape painting and figure composition. She also taught still life painting, using both oils and watercolours. Her work helped many young artists learn and grow.
