Jesus María is a small town and a municipality in the Santander Department of northeastern Colombia. It's a place with a rich history, growing from a small settlement to an official town.
A Brief History of Jesus María
The area where Jesus María is located began as a township in the mid-1700s. A township is like a small community or district.
From Township to City
By 1870, the population of Jesus María had grown quite a lot. Because of this growth, it was officially made a city. This was an important step for the community.
Becoming a Municipality
Later, in 1887, Jesus María became a municipality. A municipality is a larger administrative area, similar to a county or a district, with its own local government. This change gave the town more control over its own affairs. The town was founded by Lorenzo de Salazar on August 12, 1887.
