The Beginning of Jim's
Jim's Restaurants began in 1947. A man named G. Jim Hasslocher built his first burger stand. This stand quickly became a drive-in restaurant. At a drive-in, people could eat in their cars. Carhops would bring the food right to them! Over time, these drive-ins grew into full-service restaurants.
Growing Across Texas
The restaurant chain grew a lot over the years. Before 1980, Jim's even opened locations in the Houston area. However, Frontier Enterprises later decided to focus on other areas. They sold off the Houston restaurants. As of April 2010, Jim's had 16 locations in the San Antonio area. They also had 3 restaurants in Austin.
Jim's in San Antonio
In San Antonio, Jim's Restaurants expanded in an interesting way. In 1998, Frontier Enterprises took over eight Shoney's restaurant locations. They then changed these places into Jim's restaurants.
For over 30 years, Frontier Enterprises also ran the restaurant at the Tower of the Americas. This famous tower is located in HemisFair Park in Downtown San Antonio. In 2005, the City of San Antonio closed the Tower's restaurant for updates. After the updates, a different company took over running it.
About the Founder
The person who started Jim's Restaurants was G. Jim Hasslocher. He was the chairman of the board. Mr. Hasslocher passed away on November 18, 2015. He was 93 years old. He stayed active in the business until he passed away.
