Jimbilum is a small Aboriginal community located in Western Australia. It is found near the town of Kununurra in the beautiful Kimberley region. Jimbilum is part of the Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley.

Native Title and Community Agreements

Native title is a special right that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have to their traditional lands and waters. The Miriuwung Gajerrong people are the traditional owners of the land where Jimbilum is located.

They have signed an important agreement called the Ord Final Agreement. This agreement helps the Miriuwung Gajerrong people work together with the Western Australian State Government. It also includes businesses and developers. The goal is to plan for the future of the East Kimberley region. This partnership helps everyone in the wider community.

How the Community is Governed

The Yawoorroong Miriuwung Gajerrong Yirrgeb Noong Dawang Aboriginal Corporation, also known as MG Corp, helps manage the community. MG Corp acts on behalf of all Miriuwung Gajerrong native title holders. Their job is to make sure that the Ord Final Agreement is followed. This includes looking after the community living areas.

MG Corp was officially started in 2006. It operates under a law called the Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006. While only native title holders can be members, MG Corp helps all Miriuwung Gajerrong people. They assist with planning, managing, and using their traditional lands.

Planning for Jimbilum's Future

Every community needs a plan for how it will grow and develop. Jimbilum has a special plan called Jimbilum Layout Plan No.1. This plan was created following rules from State Planning Policy 3.2 Aboriginal Settlements.

The community agreed to Layout Plan No.1 on January 17, 2011. The Western Australian Planning Commission also approved it on September 29, 2010. You can find maps and reports about this plan on the Planning Western Australia website. These documents show how the community intends to use its land.
