Jimi Shields (born James J. Shields in 1967) is an Irish musician. He is known for being a member of the 1990s indie rock band Rollerskate Skinny. In 2001, he started a new band called Wounded Knees with Suzanne Thorpe, a flutist from the band Mercury Rev.
Jimi's Early Life and Family
Jimi Shields grew up in a family of five children. His family moved to Dublin, Ireland, when he was young. His older brother is Kevin Shields, who leads the famous band My Bloody Valentine. His younger sister, Eileen Shields, designs shoes. Jimi studied at Technological University Dublin – Bolton Street. He has three daughters with his wife, Maria Vlahos.
His Music Career
Jimi started playing drums when he was a teenager. He even took lessons from Brian Downey, a drummer from the band Thin Lizzy.
In 1991, Jimi helped form the band Rollerskate Skinny. He played guitar, drums, and sang for them. He also helped write and produce their first album, Shoulder Voices, in 1993. He also played on their EPs (shorter albums) like Novice (1992) and Trophy (1993).
In 1994, Jimi left Rollerskate Skinny and moved from Dublin to Chicago. While in Chicago, he started a new band called Lotus Crown. They released their album Chokin' on the Jokes in 1997.
Later, in 2002, Jimi worked as a touring drummer for the singer Martina Topley-Bird. In 2008, his band The Wounded Knees released an EP called "All Rise." This EP featured J Mascis from the band Dinosaur Jr. The Wounded Knees also played concerts supporting Dinosaur Jr. Jimi later recorded drum parts for his brother Kevin Shields. These recordings were used for My Bloody Valentine's 2013 album, mbv.
