Jimmy Liggins was born in Oklahoma in 1918. His birth name was James L. Elliott. When he was young, his family moved to San Diego, California. He later took his stepfather's last name, Liggins.
From Boxing to Blues
Before becoming a musician, Jimmy was a boxer! He fought professionally under the name Kid Zulu. He boxed until he was 18 years old. After his boxing career, he started working for his brother Joe. Joe Liggins was also a famous R&B musician. Jimmy drove for Joe's band, the Honeydrippers.
Starting His Own Band
In 1947, Jimmy Liggins started his own music career. He was a singer, guitarist, and bandleader. His band was called the Drops of Joy. They signed with a record company called Specialty Records.
One of his first songs was "Cadillac Boogie." This song was very important in music history. It helped lead the way for what would become rock and roll music. Another famous song, "Rocket 88," was similar to "Cadillac Boogie." Many people think "Rocket 88" was the first rock and roll record.
Influencing Other Stars
Jimmy Liggins was known for his exciting performances. He had a wild stage presence. His energetic style influenced many famous musicians. These included Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Bill Haley, and Elvis Presley. These artists went on to become rock and roll legends.
