About Joan Glassell
Her Early Life
Joan Glassell was born in Gladsmuir, Scotland. This was in a part of Scotland called East Lothian. She was the only daughter of John Glassell. Her father had lived in the American Colonies for a while. He later returned to Scotland. There, he married Helen Buchanan. Both of Joan's parents were from Scottish families.
Joan's father, John Glassell, owned a lot of land in Virginia. This was in America. Before the American War of Independence began, he gave his land to his brother. Then, he moved back to Scotland.
Marriage and Family
Joan married Lord John Campbell in 1820. At that time, he was not yet a Duke. Lord John Campbell had been married before. His first wife was Elizabeth.
Lord and Lady Campbell had three children together:
- John Henry Campbell, Earl of Campbell (1821–1837)
- George Douglas Campbell, 8th Duke of Argyll (1823–1900)
- Lady Emma Augusta Campbell (1825–1893)
Joan, Lady John Campbell, passed away in 1828. After her death, Lord John Campbell married a third time. He married Anne Monteith. She was a friend of Joan's.
Lord John Campbell became the 7th Duke of Argyll in 1839. This happened after his father passed away. Because Joan died before 1839, she was never known as the Duchess of Argyll.
The Duke died when he was 69 years old. He passed away at Inveraray Castle in Scotland. He was buried at Kilmun Parish Church. His oldest son, John, had died in 1837. So, his second son, George, became the next Duke of Argyll.
