Joan Whitrowe
Born c. 1631
Died c. 1707

Joan Whitrowe (c. 1631–1707) was an English writer who shared her religious ideas and visions. She also wrote about important public issues of her time.

Joan Whitrowe's Life Story

Joan Whitrowe was married to Robert Whitrowe, who was a tailor. They had two children, a daughter named Susannah (born around 1662, died 1677) and a son named Jason (born around 1671, died 1677).

After her children passed away, Joan felt it was a sign from God. She believed she should leave her regular home life to become a prophet, someone who shares messages they believe come from God. In 1665, she traveled to London and Bristol to share her prophecies. That same year, a terrible sickness called the Great Plague of London spread through London. Joan helped people who were suffering during this difficult time.

Her Book About Susannah

The passing of her daughter Susannah led Joan to write a book called The work of God in a dying maid, being a short account of the dealings of the Lord with one Susannah Whitrow. This book was published in 1677.

A well-known Quaker from London, Rebecca Travers, wrote the introduction for the book. Quakers are a religious group known for their simple worship and peaceful beliefs. Rebecca Travers had visited Susannah when she was ill.

Even though the book might not have been perfectly accurate, it became one of Joan's most popular writings. It described Susannah's strong words against unfairness and how she eventually became interested in the Quaker faith. The book also praised Joan's strong religious beliefs.

Joan Whitrowe was first a Quaker herself. However, she later decided not to be part of any specific religious group. She continued to write many short articles about important public topics.
