Joan Mabel Frederica du Plat Taylor (born 26 June 1906 – died 1983) was a British archaeologist. She was a true pioneer in the exciting field of underwater and nautical archaeology. This means she was one of the first people to explore and study old shipwrecks and other things found deep under the sea.
Early Life
Joan Mabel Frederica Du Plat Taylor was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on 26 June 1906. Her parents were Colonel St. John Louis Hyde du Plat Taylor and Alice Home-Purves. Even though she didn't have formal training in archaeology, she became one of the very first experts in studying history found underwater.
Exploring Shipwrecks and Sea History
Joan du Plat Taylor worked hard to make nautical archaeology a respected part of academic study. This meant she wanted universities and colleges to teach and research it properly.
In 1960, she helped lead an important dig at an ancient shipwreck. This dig happened at a place called Cape Gelidonya. She worked alongside another famous archaeologist, George Bass.
She also played a big part in creating the Council for Nautical Archaeology. This group helps to protect and study underwater historical sites. She was also the first editor of the International Journal of Nautical Archaeology (IJNA). This is a special magazine where archaeologists share their discoveries.
Joan believed that regular people, not just trained experts, could help a lot with archaeology. She set up ways to teach and encourage them. She was also the very first president of the Nautical Archaeology Society.
She even used her own money to help publish research about nautical archaeology. After she passed away, the Nautical Archaeology Society continued this support. They now give out the Joan du Plat Taylor Award to help new research get published.
