Biography
Early Life and Education
Joaquín's family originally came from the Spanish Netherlands. Their family name used to be "Becker." He studied art in his hometown at the Academy of Fine Arts. His cousin, José Domínguez Bécquer, who was also a painter, taught him there.
Later, Joaquín became a teacher at this same academy. He became a full member of the academy in 1847. When his cousin José died in 1841, Joaquín became the guardian of José's son, Valeriano Bécquer. Valeriano also grew up to be a well-known painter.
Working for the Royal Family
Joaquín received a very important job from Queen Isabella II. He was asked to lead the art work for the restoration of the Alcázar of Seville. This was a big project to bring the old royal palace back to its former glory.
Because of this important work, he earned the special title of Court Painter. This meant he was an official artist for the royal family. He was also appointed as the Master of Drawing for the Queen's nephews. These were the sons of Luisa Fernanda de Borbón and Antoine de Orleans.
Painting Style and Famous Works
Joaquín Domínguez Bécquer was a leading artist in the Costumbrista style. He often painted scenes from Seville, showing its unique customs and people. Many of his paintings can be seen in important museums. You can find his work at the Museum of Romanticism in Madrid. You can also see his art at the Carmen Thyssen Museum in Málaga.
He also painted other types of art. He created many portraits of people. He painted urban landscapes, which are scenes of cities. He also painted historical scenes. One famous large painting shows the Treaty of Wad Ras. This painting is displayed at the headquarters of the City Council of Seville. Some of his works are also at the Museo del Prado. However, many of his paintings are still held in private collections.
