Life of Infanta Luisa Fernanda
Becoming Heir to the Throne

When Luisa Fernanda was very young, her older sister, Isabella II, became the Queen of Spain. This meant that Luisa Fernanda was the next in line to the throne. She was known as the "heir presumptive" from 1833 until 1851. This changed when Queen Isabella had her first daughter who survived.
Her Royal Marriage
Luisa Fernanda became engaged to Antoine, Duke of Montpensier. He was the youngest son of King Louis Philippe I of France. Luisa was only 14 years old when she married Antoine, who was 22.
Their wedding took place on October 10, 1846. It was a special day because it was a double wedding! Her sister, Queen Isabella, also got married on the same day. After their wedding, Antoine was given the special title of an Infante of Spain.
The couple first lived in Paris, France, and then moved to Seville, Spain. There were sometimes disagreements between Luisa Fernanda's husband, Antoine, and her sister, Queen Isabella.
In 1848, Antoine's father, the King of France, lost his throne. That same year, Luisa Fernanda, at 16, had her first child, Maria Isabel. Later, when Queen Isabella was no longer queen, Luisa Fernanda and her family had to leave Spain for a while.
Years later, Luisa Fernanda returned to Seville. She passed away there after her husband had died. She was buried at Escorial, a famous royal site in Spain.
A beautiful place in Seville, the María Luisa Park, was named after her.
Luisa Fernanda's Children
Luisa Fernanda and Antoine had nine children together. However, only six of them lived to be adults.
- Infanta Maria Isabel (1848–1919): She married her cousin, Prince Philippe, Count of Paris. He was a claimant to the French throne. Maria Isabel became known as the Countess of Paris. One of her children, Princess Louise of Orléans, was the grandmother of Juan Carlos I of Spain, a future King of Spain.
- Infanta Maria Amelia (1851–1870)
- Infanta Maria Cristina (1852–1879): After her younger sister Mercedes passed away, Maria Cristina was going to marry King Alfonso XII. He was five years younger than her, but she died before the wedding could happen.
- Infanta Maria de la Regla (1856–1861)
- Infante Fernando (1859–1873)
- Infanta Maria de las Mercedes (1860–1878): She married her cousin, Alfonso XII of Spain, who became King of Spain. She is known in history as Mercedes of Orléans, Queen of Spain. They did not have any children.
- Infante Antonio, Duke of Galliera (1866–1930): He became the Duke of Galliera in Italy. He married his cousin, Infanta Eulalia of Spain. They had two sons, Infante Alfonso and Infante Luís.
Family Tree and Descendants

Only two of Luisa Fernanda's children, Isabel and Antonio, had children of their own. Through Antonio, the family line of the Dukes of Galliera continues today.
Through her daughter Maria Isabel, Luisa Fernanda became the great-grandmother of King Manuel II of Portugal. She was also the great-great-grandmother of Juan Carlos I of Spain, who became King of Spain much later.
