Joaquín María López y López (born August 15, 1798 – died November 14, 1855) was an important Spanish politician, writer, and journalist. He served as the Prime Minister of Spain twice in 1843. This was during the time when Queen Isabella II ruled Spain.
López also held other key political jobs. He was the Minister of Gobernation from 1836 to 1837. Later, he became the Mayor of Madrid in 1840.

Joaquín María López's Early Life
Joaquín María López was born in 1798. His parents were Alonso López de Oliver de Platas y Selva and Pascasia López de Cervera y Fernández de Palencia. He married his cousin, Manuela López de Oliver de Platas y de Cervera y Fernández de Plasencia. They had seven children together.
His family had a long history, dating back to the 1200s. They were a noble family from Aragon. They helped King James I of Aragon in his military campaigns. They also helped King Alfonso X in reconquering Murcia. Because of their help, they received large estates near Villena.
The family was always involved in politics in their region. They supported the Catholic Monarchs and served King Philip II. They also helped King Philip IV.
Education and Exile
Joaquín María López studied Philosophy from 1811 to 1814. He attended the School of San Fulgencia de Murcia. After that, he studied law at the University of Orihuela. He earned his first law degree in 1818 and a higher one in 1821.
While studying, he also taught. He was a professor of Moral Philosophy and Law. After a period called the Trienio Liberal ended, he had to leave Spain. He went to Montpellier to escape political problems. In Montpellier, he continued his studies, learning about Sciences and Medicine.
Political Career and Achievements
Joaquín María López started his political journey in 1833. He became a representative in the Alicante city government. In 1834, he was elected as a member of parliament for Alicante province.
He then became the Minister of Gobernation. This happened when José María Calatrava was president. In 1840, he served as the Mayor of Madrid. He became Prime Minister of Spain two times.
One very important decision during his time as Prime Minister was declaring Queen Isabella II old enough to rule. This meant she could take full control as queen. After this, he left politics for a while. He returned briefly between 1849 and 1853. During this time, he was a Senator and a special Minister for the War Tribunal and Navy.
Political Beliefs and Influence
Joaquín María López was a key member of the Progressive Party. People admired him for his excellent speaking skills. He was known for being a very persuasive speaker.
He strongly believed in the rights of women. He also wanted to end the system of mayorazgos. This was a system where land and titles were passed down to only one heir, usually the eldest son. He also pushed for changes in education. He wanted to see a universal democracy established in Spain. He often turned down honors like noble titles and special salaries.
